The study reported in this volume grew out of some theoretical work, one phase of which bore specifically on the behavior of individuals in social movements that made specific and unfulfilled prophecies. We had been forced to depend chiefly on historical records to judge the adequacy of our theoretical ideas until we by chance discovered the social movement that we report in this book. At the time we learned of it, the movement was in mid-career but the prophecy about which it was centered had not yet been disconfirmed.

They suspected that he should have discovered something important about the case, Kate was afraid that George might open the old case again. She told Joe to act smartly with George, the matter which reflects their certain feeling of guilt. George turned up to visit his father in Columbus — the jail- after the three years.
Now all of a sudden George visits his father in jail, and comes back so hurriedly to the Kellers; moreover, George is now a lawyer and has his own office and can handle matters more efficiently. Kate fears opening the old case once more. What did he advise Ann to do? On the day of the trial, all the people thought that Joe Keller was a criminal, the beast who caused 21 P40s to crash in Australia.
He was guilty as hell according to them that day, but he faced them all courageously with the court paper which announced his innocence. He kept settling in the town and faced them all. The result was that they stopped talking and Keller had a bigger factory than before, and he became a respected man again, bigger than ever. And I guess they were, I guess they were.
He should have been thinking of any airman as his son - that they are all his sons. His moral responsibility extends beyond his immediate family. Arthur Miller uses this family tragedy to make a clear statement about war - about the economics of war and the decisions made during wartime that were unethical and inhumane. I think the second name Keller was used by Miller as it is similar to the pronunciation of the word killer and he was a killer as he was the main cause of the death of the 21 pilots and his son.
If you look at Act One carefully, it becomes very obvious that Kate is a woman who is unable to move on from the disappearance of her son, Larry. She is presented as a character who is unable to contemplate the possibility of her son's death, and thus she clings on to the vain hope that he is not "missing in action" but will find his way back home eventually and re-enter their lives. Notice how she says to both Joe Keller and Chris that she wants them to "act like he's coming back": Because if he's not coming back, then I'll kill myself!
Of course, as the play progresses , we realise that Kate is so fixated on believing in Larry's safe return because if she accepts he is dead, then she has to accept that her husband was responsible for the deaths of the soldiers because of the faulty parts his factory provided.
